What is polio?

Polio, also known as poliomyelitis, is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus that causes permanent or temporary damage to the nervous system. Compared to adults, children under 5 are more likely to be infected with the virus. The disease is transmitted by an infected person.

This disease is the leading cause of disability in most children. With this ring it is also known as infantile paralysis.

The polio vaccine was first developed in 1953 and made available in 1957. Since then, prevention of this disease has been possible.

Symptoms of non-paralysis polio

  3. Fatigue.
  4. Sore throat.
  5. head ache.
  6. back pain.
  7. Muscle weakness or tenderness.
  8. Meningitis.

Symptoms of paralysis polio

About 1 percent of polio (poliomyelitis) cases may develop as paralytic . Paralytic  primarily indicates paralysis in the spinal cord, brainstem, or both.

The initial symptoms of paralytic  are similar to those of non-paralytic. But in this condition, more severe symptoms begin after one week. Symptoms of paralytic  include:-

  1. Loss of reflexes.
  2. Severe spasms and muscle pain.
  3. Inactivity in only one side of the body.
  4. Sudden temporary or permanent paralysis.
  5. Deformity especially in the hips, ankles and feet, etc.
  6. 5–10 percent of polio paralysis cases cause death.

What is treatment?

Poliomyelitis or  is a highly contagious disease caused by the virus. The polio virus attacks our nervous system. Experts of this disease say that children under 5 years of age are more likely to contact the virus than other groups. According to the World Health Organization, for every 200 people affected by , 1 person has permanent paralysis.
